On 9 December 2009 a blue beam and an enormous grey spiral stood over northern Norway. A submarine had fired a missile whose third stage failed. The spiral was sunlight on leaking fuel, spinning.

Every few months a film is found to have predicted something. Nobody counts the films that predicted nothing. We took 240 titles from one decade, logged every specific catastrophe depicted in them, and checked all of them.

The epics really do describe flying chariots, and they are ancient. The engineering manual everybody cites is not: a man dictated it between 1918 and 1923 and said a sage was speaking through him.

Environmental DNA picks up every animal that has been near the water. We sampled eleven sites across a watershed with a long sighting record. The lab found forty-one vertebrate species. The unmatched sequences turned out to be a vole.

They Really Did Make It In A Lab. The Rumour, Not The Virus.

A state intelligence service invented the story in 1983, planted it in a newspaper it owned, and admitted it in 1992. And there are two blood samples from Kinshasa, from 1959 and 1960, already different from each other.

They Proposed Shooting Down An American Airliner. The President Said No.

The memorandum is dated 13 March 1962, signed by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and sat classified for thirty-five years. It is at College Park. It is not evidence for any of the claims it made plausible.

One Man Knew Who Paid For It. He Died Without Saying.

A stranger walked into an Elberton bank in 1979 with a design and a budget. The bank president kept his name for forty-two years, destroyed the file, and took it with him. The monument was blown up eight months after he died.

They Drilled Seventeen Blocks. The Stone Formed Where It Lies.

The blocks are rectangular, they run in an arc, and they look laid. Seventeen cores were drilled and X-rayed. The sand layers inside every one of them dip the same way — seaward, as a beach lays down.

The Giants Are In The Newspaper. They Are Not In The Cave.

Two miners dug guano out of a Nevada cave in 1911. The bones they found were about six feet. We tracked every retelling since, and the skeletons grow by roughly four inches per reprint.

Alaric Nkemdi-Foss, Who Answered In Nine Days, Dies At 79

He was a records officer at a forestry office in Suffolk for thirty-four years. In February he found a 1981 stand map nobody had ever asked for, and posted it. It is the strongest single thing in a story about 1980.

He Had The Numbers In 1847. He Published In 1861.

Mortality in his own ward fell from 11.4 per cent to under two in a year. He did not write it up for fourteen years, and when he did he called his readers murderers. Both halves of that killed women.

For Two Centuries It Was Folklore. It Turned Out To Be Dirt.

Sailors and farmers reported it for two hundred years and were told they had imagined it. In July 2012 a spectrograph on a plateau was pointed at ordinary lightning when a ball appeared 900 metres away.

Thousands Remember The Photograph. The Article Does Not Mention One.

The Tombstone Epitaph really did print the story, on 26 April 1890. We read the original off the microfilm. There is no photograph in it, no reference to one, and no photographer named.

A Clerk Misspelled It In 1935. He Kept The Mistake.

The extra letter on the headstone is the most-cited proof that the grave is a decoy. His birth certificate carries it too — the state wrote it that way by accident, and when he found out he decided he preferred it.

Six Firms Sold Him The Harvest. None Knew About The Others.

One buyer moved through six American exporters in six weeks and contracted four hundred million bushels of wheat. The export subsidy helped pay for it. The Agriculture Secretary found out from a witness at a hearing.

He Made Them Up, Made Money, And Kept The Letters.

The men in black entered the world in a 1956 book by a West Virginia publisher. He wrote to one collaborator afterwards: evidently the fans swallowed this one with a gulp. His whole archive is in a public library.

They Filed The Paperwork. The Stated Aim Was Cheap Housing.

Europe's most secret order registered at a sub-prefecture on 7 May 1956, published its existence in the government gazette that July, and named itself after a hill you can see from the car park.

They Did Dig Something Up. It Cannot Have Been Him.

The whole story is one sentence, in one private letter, from a man who was not there to a man who was not there. The graves at Fort Sill were unmarked until the thirties.
