Chain of custody

Written by this newspaper's retained occupational hygienist, negotiated across two meetings that the campaign group minuted and published, and signed by both parties before a single participant was approached. It is in the vault because a protocol that appears after the result is not a protocol, and the only way to prove otherwise is to file it in public with a date on it.

Held by: They Buried, document room; the campaign group holds a countersigned original

Excerpt

§2 Selection. The campaign group selects all forty participants. The newspaper
has no role in selection and is not told the participants' names until
    issue.

§5 Blinding. Participants are not shown their own readings during the study
period. [Campaign group dissents; dissent printed with the story.]

§6 Withdrawal. Any participant may withdraw at any time and require their
data destroyed rather than analysed. No reason need be given.

§9 Amendment. This protocol may not be amended after recruitment begins.

§11 Publication. Results are published in November 2027 regardless of what
they show, including if they are unfavourable to either signatory.

Transcribed by the data desk. Line breaks follow the original. Bracketed matter is ours.

Editor's note

The clause the document desk would point at is §9. A protocol that cannot be amended after recruitment means this newspaper has agreed in advance to publish a flawed study and say so, rather than quietly improving one halfway through. It was the campaign group's clause, not ours.
