Chain of custody

Requested at the counter by our correspondent on 11 February 2026 and produced the same morning. No appointment, no letter, no fee. She photographed all four pages with permission and read the bound gazette volume in the departmental archive the following day. The archivist, who is named in the story, says the folder is pulled roughly twice a year.

Held by: Original remains with the sub-prefecture; They Buried holds photographs and the request slip

Transcribed by the data desk. Line breaks follow the original. Bracketed matter is ours.

Editor's note

Filed because the entire English-language argument about this subject is about a genealogy, and the answerable question was never the genealogy. It was what two men wrote on a form in 1956, which is public, local, and takes a morning.
