A preprint posted publicly in March 2023 and withdrawn by its own authors in July 2023. We hold the original posting, the withdrawal notice, and correspondence in which both authors explain, on the record, why they withdrew it. Both said we could publish their explanation and both said they no longer stand behind the paper.

Excerpt
…the apparent 297-year discontinuity reported in §4 is, on re-examination, an artefact of a single mis-keyed sample identifier propagating through the master chronology. We withdraw the paper and thank the correspondent who found it.
Transcribed by the data desk. Line breaks follow the original. Bracketed matter is ours.
Editor's note
We list this in the rejected drawer even though it is the single most-requested document in our postbag. It was withdrawn by its own authors for a reason they explained clearly, and we will not cite it as evidence of anything.
