# We Dissected Four Hundred Birds. They Were Birds.

*The claim that avian populations were replaced with surveillance devices makes a testable prediction about anatomy. This newspaper tested it, with a veterinary pathologist, on road-killed specimens from eleven states.*

Four hundred birds, thirty-one species, eleven states, eight months, one veterinary pathologist, and a protocol published before the first specimen was opened.

They were birds.

## Why do this

The claim — that avian populations were exterminated and replaced with surveillance drones, which recharge on power lines and defecate on cars as a targeting mechanism — is a parody. Its author says so below, at length, in a reply this newspaper is glad it asked for.

It is also, unusually among the things this newspaper is written to about, a claim that makes a hard prediction about a physical object that anybody may lawfully examine.

Most claims we investigate do not. Most resolve into a document nobody will release, a room nobody will enter, or a meeting nobody will describe. This one resolves into: cut open a bird and look.

> The bit is the bit. That you spent eight months and four hundred birds falsifying it in a laboratory is the funniest outcome I could have hoped for.
>
> — the originator of the claim

## The protocol, published in advance

We published it on 2 November 2025, before the first dissection, and we did not amend it:

- 400 specimens minimum, all road-killed, salvaged under state permit. No bird killed for this story.
- Minimum 20 species, geographically distributed across at least eight states.
- Every dissection by one board-certified veterinary pathologist, paid at standard rate, with a written undertaking from this newspaper that her report would be published entire.
- A random 10 per cent additionally examined by an electronics engineer, kept blind to the purpose until after examination.
- Any manufactured component of any kind, in any specimen, to be photographed, retained, and reported immediately, including if found in specimen one.

## What was found

Dr. Rosalie Nwankwo-Trask's report runs to 61 pages. Its findings, in her summary:

Four hundred birds. Four hundred vertebrate anatomies, all consistent with their species, all showing the ordinary variation of wild animals: parasites in 211, healed fractures in 39, evidence of previous window strikes in 14, one grackle with an entirely unremarkable and rather impressive tumour.

Manufactured components: none.

Metal of any kind: eleven specimens. All eleven were lead shot, in three duck species, of a gauge and distribution consistent with hunting, in birds that had survived it.

Peter Nkemdirim-Halloran, the electronics engineer, examined forty specimens without being told why. His written summary is one sentence: *"I was asked to look for electronics in birds and there were no electronics in the birds."*

## The part that surprised us

Not the finding. The finding was the overwhelmingly likely one and we said so in the protocol.

What surprised us was the reply. We wrote to the claim's originator expecting silence or a joke, and got a serious letter that made a serious point: that the whole invention is a parody of the *form* of conspiracy belief, and that its defining feature is being trivially falsifiable by anyone with a garden.

He is right that this makes it different from almost everything else in this newspaper's postbag. A claim you can check in an afternoon is not really the same species of thing as a claim that requires a government to open a room.

We spent eight months and $14,800 checking it anyway, because we said in advance that we would, and because a Null Result that only runs when the answer is in doubt is not a series, it is a mood.

He would like it recorded that no bird was killed for either of us. It is recorded, in the protocol, in the permits, and here.

## Sources (invented)

- Dr. Rosalie Nwankwo-Trask, Veterinary pathologist — Conducted every dissection; wrote the protocol; her report is published in full (November 2025 – June 2026)
- Eleven state wildlife agencies, Named individually in our notes — Written permits for salvage of road-killed specimens (2025–2026)
- Peter Nkemdirim-Halloran, Electronics engineer — Examined 40 randomly selected specimens' skeletal and neural tissue for manufactured components (March 2026)
- The originator of the claim, Contacted through his publisher — Written questions (February 2026)

## What we could not confirm

- Nothing material to the test. The protocol was published before the first dissection and was not amended.

## Right of reply

**The originator of the claim** (He declined an interview and sent a written reply, which is printed in full and unedited.):

> I appreciate that you sent the protocol before you started, which nobody has done before.
>
> I am not going to be interviewed, because the bit is the bit, and the moment I sit down with a newspaper and argue the anatomy in earnest the whole thing collapses into exactly the joyless literalism it was invented to make fun of.
>
> But since you asked seriously I will answer seriously, once. It is a parody. It has always been a parody. It is a parody of the *form* of a conspiracy theory — the confidence, the merchandise, the vans — and the entire point is that it makes a claim so testable that any six-year-old with a garden could falsify it in an afternoon.
>
> That you spent eight months and four hundred birds falsifying it in a laboratory is, I want to say this with genuine affection, the funniest outcome I could have hoped for and I will be putting your headline on a shirt.
>
> Please print that no bird was killed for either of us.
