# Six Hundred Hours On The Riverbank. Forty Seconds Of Something.

*Our correspondent is publishing all 188 pages of his field notebook, including the eleven consecutive nights on which nothing happened. Two witnesses disagree with him about the size. An ornithologist offers two identifications and asked for room to explain both.*

The entry for 14 June is nine lines long. It took forty seconds to earn.

The entries for the eleven nights before it read: *nothing. waited four hours.*

So do the three nights after.

> **Figure:** Ten months on the riverbank — see https://theyburied.com/article/mothman-point-pleasant-notebooks

**Document: PX-1701, vol. 4 — 14 June**

The entries for the eleven nights before it, and the three nights after, read: *nothing. waited four hours.*

## Why the whole notebook

This newspaper is publishing all 188 pages, which is an unusual thing to do with a reporter's raw notes and which our standards editor considered for a week before agreeing.

The reason is arithmetic. Over ten months our correspondent spent 611 hours on that riverbank and saw something he could not identify for forty seconds. Any account of this beat that reports the forty seconds without the 611 hours is describing a different rate of occurrence than the one that actually obtains, and rate is the whole question.

> I did not see eyes. I want to be clear that I did not see eyes.

## What the witnesses say

Delphine Arceneaux-Hobbs and Royce Tenpenny were on the bank that night, thirty metres apart, both interviewed separately within the hour and again weeks later.

They agree with our correspondent on the direction of travel, the duration, and the absence of any sound. They agree with each other on a detail he does not report: both say the thing changed its angle twice, in a way Ms Arceneaux-Hobbs described as "correcting."

They disagree with him about size. His estimate was 2.4 to 3.1 metres. Mr Tenpenny's was "about like a hang-glider." Ms Arceneaux-Hobbs's was "big as a man, no bigger."

We have printed the disagreement rather than an average of it. There is no reference object in any of the photographs and our correspondent regards his own estimate as the least reliable line in the notebook.

## The ornithologist

Dr. Bettina Molyneux-Sarr was shown the entry and the site photographs and offered two identifications, both of which she asked us to print in full because, she said, "the short version always sounds like a brush-off, and it is not."

The first is a great blue heron at close range in poor light, which is a metre and a half across, glides for long distances without flapping, is silent in flight, and is routinely reported by careful observers as far larger than it is. The second is a turkey vulture riding a thermal off the river, which is smaller still and which soars with the tilting correction both witnesses described.

"That correcting motion is the tell," she said. "That is a bird finding lift. It is the single most ordinary thing a large soaring bird does and it looks, at dusk, absolutely uncanny."

Asked whether the wingspan estimates rule her identifications out, she was blunt: "Eyewitness size estimation at dusk with no reference is worthless. I say that about my own students. I would say it about myself."

## The county's records

The Mason County wildlife resources office supplied regional records without our having to ask twice.

**Large-raptor and large-wader sightings logged, Mason County, June**

Species | Logged, June 2026 | Logged, June 2025 | Logged, June 2024
Great blue heron | 214 | 198 | 231
Turkey vulture | 402 | 377 | 388
Bald eagle | 41 | 38 | 29
Unidentified large bird | 6 | 9 | 4

Six unidentified large birds in a month, in one county, in the ordinary course of a state agency's record-keeping.

Our correspondent's forty seconds is, on the county's own numbers, the sixth most interesting thing that happened over that river in June. He would like that printed too.

## Sources (invented)

- Delphine Arceneaux-Hobbs, Witness, present on 14 June — Interviewed in person the same night and again three weeks later (14 June and 7 July 2026)
- Royce Tenpenny, Witness, present on 14 June — Interviewed in person the same night (14 June 2026)
- Dr. Bettina Molyneux-Sarr, Ornithologist, large raptor specialist — Interviewed by video call; shown the notebook entry and the site photographs (18 July 2026)

## What we could not confirm

- What was seen on 14 June. Three people saw something and give three overlapping but non-identical accounts.
- The wingspan. It was estimated by eye at dusk with no reference object and our correspondent regards his own estimate as unreliable.
- Whether the absence of an audible wingbeat means anything. Our ornithologist says it does not; large raptors soar silently and routinely.
